Find out how one Heroes group are doing Reading Force…

Plymstock School, Plymouth, HMS Heroes Group

HMS Heroes Plymouth mascot 200x150The fantastic children from Plymstock School HMS Heroes group discovered Reading Force themselves and then asked Tracy, their group leader, to contact us so they could take part. We sent them scrapbooks, they put up posters, and Tracy bought some of our recommended reads. In their HMS Heroes room is a shelf and a display table for the Reading Force books and these have been borrowed, shared, taken home, read and talked about. And they’ve been spreading the word about Reading Force – one Hero gave a talk about the scheme to younger children to encourage them to take part. We’re pleased that even their mascot bear, Commander, got involved.

Thanks to an award kindly gifted by the Siobhan Dowd Trust we’ve been able to give out over 1,100 books to HMS Heroes in Devon, Cornwall and North Yorkshire. The Heroes were able to choose from a specially compiled list of exciting new titles and tried and trusted classic stories. Whilst we've now used up the award we are hoping to give out further books to other HMS Heroes groups in 2015 from new funding.

“Her Majesty’s School Heroes (HMS Heroes) is a national support group for the children of Service men and women and their relatives. A tri-Service network of after-school clubs, HMS Heroes brings together members of Service families aged between three and 18 years old from all over the country. Our members are ambassadors and young advocates for Service families across the United Kingdom, and most importantly, they are friends who are there for each other, especially in times of need.”
